The short answer
A single teacher can potentially save on ฿35,000–฿50,000 a month, but the result ranges from almost nothing to a meaningful monthly amount. At ฿35,000, Bangkok can leave little room after ordinary bills unless rent is unusually low or housing is provided. ฿40,000 may allow a modest buffer with controlled costs. ฿50,000 makes saving more plausible, but frequent travel, debt, private insurance or a central-city apartment can still absorb the difference. Provincial living may cost less, while local salaries may also be lower.
These are planning judgments, not guarantees. The three examples below assume a single person, steady year-round pay and no dependants or overseas debt payments. They exclude flights home and major emergencies from the monthly budget, so treat the leftover as a ceiling for routine saving—not as money you will certainly keep.
If your immediate question is specifically whether one ฿35,000 offer covers a Bangkok budget, see our ฿35,000 Bangkok teaching-salary breakdown. This guide compares several salary levels and considers savings, taxes and the costs of starting a job.
What the numbers can—and cannot—tell you
The National Statistical Office’s 2024 household survey reported average monthly expenditure of ฿22,282 nationwide and ฿30,464 for Greater Bangkok households. Those figures describe households, not single foreign teachers, and include different household sizes, income levels and in-kind consumption. They are context for regional variation, not a recommended personal budget or proof that one salary is enough. The survey says it covers 57,600 households in all provinces.
Teacher-specific anecdotes add useful texture but are not representative samples. In a Reddit post, one new teacher reported ฿42,500 income, ฿14,195 for rent and utilities, ฿11,293 for food and ฿8,597 saved in a November budget; the poster noted that visa costs varied by school and could be partly reimbursed. Those listed amounts total ฿34,085, leaving ฿8,415 of reported income outside the figures quoted, so this is not a complete ledger. It is one person’s month, with one person’s housing, diet and contract. Another Reddit discussion about a ฿34,000 Chum Phae offer drew sharply different replies: some thought basic living was manageable, while others said saving would be difficult without housing or a very frugal routine. Treat both as lived experience, not a forecast for you.
Ajarn’s guide for new teachers, updated 10 September 2026, suggests aiming for ฿40,000–฿50,000 in Bangkok for a reasonably comfortable single-person lifestyle; it says provincial salaries of ฿25,000–฿35,000 remain common and housing may cost less. This is an experienced recruitment-site guide, not an official salary survey. For current offers, inspect the salary, paid months, location, housing and benefits in the actual contract. Three monthly budgets: ฿35,000, ฿40,000 and ฿50,000
The table is a deliberately simple comparison, not a quote for rent or a promise of take-home pay. Gross salary is the amount before any deductions. The tax estimate assumes twelve equal months of Thai employment income, a single taxpayer resident in Thailand for tax purposes using the Revenue Department’s ฿60,000 capped employment deduction and ฿30,000 personal allowance, no other income or deductions, and no employer-paid benefits. Thai tax residency generally depends on presence in Thailand for more than 180 days in a tax year; nonresidents can still owe Thai tax on Thai-source employment income. Under those assumptions, estimated annual personal income tax is about ฿10,500 at ฿35,000/month, ฿16,500 at ฿40,000/month and ฿29,000 at ฿50,000/month. That averages about ฿875, ฿1,375 and ฿2,417 monthly respectively. Actual payroll withholding and final tax depend on your facts; social security or other payroll deductions are not included.

Amounts are taken from the table above. The bar compares the illustrative amount left after modeled tax and listed costs; it is not a guaranteed saving.
*Tax shown as a monthly equivalent of the illustrative annual calculation above. Each expense line is an assumption for comparison, not a sourced average. Rent includes utilities; the health line is a monthly reserve, not an insurance quote. The scenarios exclude dependants, debt, flights, tuition, large medical costs, deposits, and unpaid gaps between contracts. A provincial version could use lower rent or transport, but do not assume those savings without a real local quote.
The leftover is not automatically a savings rate. It may need to cover trips home, a replacement laptop, a medical excess, family support, retirement contributions, or a gap in summer pay. If you pay ฿5,000 a month toward overseas debt, the ฿35,000 example is already in deficit. Conversely, employer housing or meals can improve cash flow if the benefit is reliable and its tax treatment is understood.

Bangkok versus a provincial town
Bangkok offers more choice in transport, housing, services and social activities, but easy access also makes it easy to spend. Rent near a train station or school may be worth it if the commute is shorter, while a cheaper room far away can add fares and time. The NSO’s Greater Bangkok household average is higher than the national figure, but it is not a single-person foreign-teacher benchmark. Ajarn’s guidance similarly cautions that rent and transport can consume a large share of a Bangkok teacher’s salary.
In a provincial town, a basic apartment and everyday food may cost less, but your salary can also be lower and imported goods, medical options or travel to a major airport may cost more. A ฿35,000 provincial offer with no housing is not automatically better than a ฿40,000 Bangkok offer with a shorter commute or subsidized rent. Compare the whole contract and your actual address, not just the city label.
Ask for the exact school location and nearby rent examples. Check transport at the hours you will travel, utility billing, deposit and contract length. If the employer says housing is included, get the address, deductions, utilities, deposit responsibility and what happens if the job ends in writing.
Costs that can erase a month of saving

Arrival and first salary
Budget for the move before assuming your first pay arrives quickly. You may need flights, temporary accommodation, rental deposits, basic household items, document preparation, local transport and food before payroll begins. The timing depends on the school, start date and payroll cutoff. Keep enough accessible cash to cover a delayed first salary and a return or change-of-plan ticket. The monthly remainder above starts after arrival and does not repay one-off costs. For a conservative runway, add the rental deposit and temporary accommodation, then keep a second month of expenses available in case payroll misses its first cutoff. Do not count a refundable deposit as savings until it is returned. If the employer promises to reimburse visa or document costs, check in writing whether payment is immediate or conditional on finishing the contract. Our Bangkok TEFL cost and runway guide separates training costs from living costs; the calculator lets you model your own months to first pay.
Tax and payroll deductions
Thailand uses progressive personal income tax rates. Tax residency generally applies at more than 180 days in Thailand in a tax year; nonresidents may still be taxed on Thai-source employment income. The Revenue Department’s English guidance lists the employment-income deduction as 40%, capped at ฿60,000, and a ฿30,000 personal allowance for a single taxpayer; the first ฿150,000 of taxable income is exempt. That is why the lowest salary scenario still has estimated tax under these assumptions; a low effective rate does not mean salary is automatically tax-free. Employers may withhold tax during the year and withholding is credited against final liability. Ask for a payslip, clarify whether the offer is gross or net, and confirm who handles annual filing. A teacher with other income, benefits, deductions or part-year work may have a different result.
Insurance, social security and medical costs
Do not assume that a job includes private health insurance. Ask whether you will be enrolled in Thai social security, what the employer pays, which facilities and treatment it covers, and whether you need separate cover for travel, evacuation or pre-existing conditions. The monthly reserve in our table is a planning allowance, not an insurance premium or guarantee that a major bill is covered. Compare policies and exclusions before travelling.
Visa, work permit and teacher permission
Ask which costs the employer pays, which you pay upfront, and whether reimbursement depends on completing the contract. Visa status, work authorization and any applicable teacher permission are separate processes; a TEFL certificate by itself does not authorize employment. Have the named school explain the current process for your role and nationality before you commit. Our teaching contract checklist includes questions about deductions, sponsorship, leave and pay.
School breaks and unpaid time
Never turn “monthly salary” into twelve guaranteed paychecks without checking the agreement. Confirm contract dates, the number of paid months, salary during term breaks, public-holiday treatment, sick leave, annual leave and whether summer work is expected. A monthly budget that works only when all twelve months are paid can fail if the contract has an unpaid gap or you change schools. Set aside part of each paid month for any known break.
Can you build savings over a year?
If the illustrative monthly leftover stayed untouched for twelve months, it would equal roughly ฿37,500 at ฿35,000 pay, ฿55,500 at ฿40,000 and ฿73,000 at ฿50,000. That arithmetic assumes continuous paid work and no irregular costs, so it should not be read as a likely outcome. One flight home, a month between jobs, a medical bill, or sending money to family can reduce it quickly. A useful test is to budget the year, not just a typical month.
A teacher’s individual Reddit budget shows why both outcomes are possible: the poster saved ฿8,597 from ฿42,500 in one month, while another commenter with a car payment, insurance, fuel and higher food spending described ฿52,000 in basic monthly costs. In a different discussion, a former teacher said ฿50,000 felt comfortable with ฿10,000 rent and frequent local travel, but later regretted having little significant savings. The stories are not directly comparable; they show how debt, life stage, benefits and priorities affect what “saving” means.
Decide what counts as success before accepting an offer. Is your goal to fund an emergency reserve, repay debt, save for a return flight, or invest for retirement? If your goal requires a fixed monthly transfer, test that amount after realistic rent, insurance and leave—not from the advertised gross salary.
A realistic decision checklist
- Take-home: Is the salary gross or net, how many months are paid, and what deductions appear on a sample payslip?
- Housing: Have you checked current rent and utilities within a manageable commute from the actual school?
- Starting cash: Can you cover deposits, arrival costs and at least a delayed first-pay period without credit-card debt?
- Benefits: What insurance, social security, visa/work-permit support, meals and housing are written into the contract?
- Time off: Are school breaks, public holidays, sick days and summer months paid? What happens between contracts?
- Annual goal: After flights, family support, debt and irregular bills, does the yearly plan still meet your savings target?
- Location: Have you budgeted the exact commute and local services rather than relying on “Bangkok” or “provincial” averages?
- Fallback: Do you have emergency funds and a way to leave or change plans if the job or authorization does not proceed?
If several answers are unknown, treat the offer as unpriced. Request written terms and build a cash runway before paying for a move or course.
