Do you need a TEFL certificate to teach English in Thailand?

A TEFL certificate is training, not teacher authorization, immigration permission or a work permit. Check the exact requirements for the role and school.

The short answer

A TEFL certificate is not the same as permission to teach or permission to work in Thailand. A TEFL course can build practical teaching skills and may be requested or preferred by a particular school. For a school teaching job, the questions to verify are which Teachers’ Council licence or permission applies to your role, which immigration status and work permit are required, and what the school itself requires when hiring.

The official materials reviewed for this guide describe teacher licensing or case-specific permission, immigration status and work-permit requirements. They do not establish a general nationwide rule that every English teacher must hold a TEFL certificate. The responsible authority and school should confirm the route for your exact position before you enrol, travel or accept a start date. The Teachers’ Council’s temporary-permit criteria and Department of Employment guidance for foreign teachers address separate requirements.

Keep these four requirements separate

ItemWhat it is forWhat it does not do by itself

Teacher licence or Teachers’ Council permissionProfessional authorization for a teaching role where applicableIt does not itself give permission to stay or work under immigration and labour rules
Visa or immigration statusPermission to enter or remain under stated conditionsIt does not itself authorize every kind of work
Work permitAuthorization to perform specified work under applicable rulesIt does not guarantee that a school will hire you
School hiring criteriaThe employer’s requirements for a particular vacancyOne school’s rules do not automatically apply to every school

The Teachers’ Council of Thailand (Khurusapha) currently publishes foreign-teacher P-License registration guidance and a separate route for temporary permission to practise without a professional licence. Its P-License page was updated on 1 July 2026. The Council’s 2023 FAQ still lists Council-issued documents that may authorize teaching before a B-License, but it is not a current case-specific determination. Ask your school to confirm which live route applies to your role with Khurusapha and the education authority responsible for that school.

For the immigration and employment side, the DOE’s 2 April 2026 notice says foreign teachers in schools need an appropriate Non-Immigrant status rather than tourist or transit entry, and must have a work permit for the work they perform. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes teacher-specific supporting documents for some Non-Immigrant B applications. Requirements depend on the application route and mission; follow the authority handling your case. See our Thailand teacher visa and work-permit guide.

Is TEFL legally required?

The official sources reviewed here do not identify a TEFL certificate as a universal legal authorization to teach in Thailand. They discuss professional teacher licences or permissions and work authorization. Those are distinct from a TEFL course certificate.

That does not mean that no employer can require TEFL. A school or recruiter may set a TEFL/TESOL requirement for a specific job, prefer candidates with training, or use it as evidence of classroom preparation. Check the wording in the vacancy and get a written answer from the employer. Do not treat a provider’s sales page, another teacher’s experience or one school’s practice as a nationwide legal rule.

There can also be differences between schools and types of teaching work. This guide focuses on employed teaching roles in schools. Language centres, tutoring arrangements, international schools, universities, government programmes and non-academic instructor roles may have different professional and employment processes. Confirm which rules apply to the exact institution and duties.

When a TEFL certificate may help

TEFL training may be useful if you are new to teaching, want structured practice, or see it requested in vacancies that match your qualifications. A course can teach lesson planning, classroom management and language-teaching methods. Supervised practice and useful feedback may matter more to your preparation than a large number of online hours alone.

Before paying, check the vacancies you would realistically apply for and ask the schools whether they accept the exact course and certificate. Also ask whether they require a degree, subject qualification, teacher licence or permission, experience, English test, and particular nationality or language profile. Our guide to teaching in Thailand with no experience and non-native English speaker guide cover those separate hiring questions.

Can you apply without TEFL?

Possibly, if the vacancy does not require it and you meet the school’s other criteria. Hiring is decided by the employer, while teacher authorization and permission to work involve the relevant authorities. Do not infer eligibility from a TEFL certificate alone, or assume that a school will waive a requirement because a different school did.

Before spending money on a course, send the school a short eligibility question. Ask for the exact requirement in writing, especially if a recruiter says a TEFL certificate is “required by law” or “guarantees” a work permit or job. Request the legal or official source for any such claim and verify it with the responsible authority.

How to choose training if you decide to take it

There is no single course length that guarantees a job or government permission. Some vacancies may ask for a 120-hour course, while others focus on a degree, teaching experience, subject knowledge, a professional teaching qualification or a demo lesson. Confirm the specific requirement before comparing providers.

Use this checklist:

“120 hours” can be a useful comparison point because some providers and vacancies use it, but it is not a universal Thai legal threshold. A longer course is not automatically better for your circumstances. Our online versus in-person TEFL comparison explains how to compare course formats.

Questions to ask before enrolling or accepting a job

Send the employer or school these questions:

  1. Is a TEFL/TESOL certificate required for this exact role, preferred, or not required?
  2. If required, which awarding body, course length and course format do you accept?
  3. Which degree, teaching qualification, experience or English evidence do you need?
  4. Which Teachers’ Council licence or permission route applies to this institution and position, and who submits the application?
  5. Which visa and work-permit steps apply, who is the legal employer, and what must be approved before I teach?
  6. Can you provide the requirements and any placement or support promise in writing?

Before your first working day, check that the documents and permissions cover your employer, role and work location. The DOE states that foreign teachers must not work without the required permit or outside its scope. If the school’s answer is unclear, confirm with the relevant DOE office, Khurusapha and the immigration authority handling your application.

Considering Essential TEFL?

If you have decided that practical training would help, compare course content, teaching practice, eligibility, total cost and written support terms. Read our independent Essential TEFL review and the online versus in-person course guide before choosing. Essential TEFL publishes a current course information page; confirm the exact intake, fees, certificate and eligibility directly with the provider.

Affiliate disclosure: The Essential TEFL link is an affiliate link. SiamTEFL may earn a commission if you enrol through it, at no extra cost to you. This does not affect the requirements discussed above. A course does not confer a Thai teaching licence or work authorization and does not guarantee employment.

The decision in one minute

Treat those as separate checks. Confirm the route for your school and duties before committing money or starting work. Procedures and employer requirements can change; this guide was reviewed on 11 October 2026.
