120-Hour vs Level 5 TEFL in Thailand: Is the Extra ฿5,000 Worth It?

For Essential TEFL’s Bangkok courses, Level 5 costs ฿5,000 more and has a regulated qualification assessment. That may be worth paying for if you value the qualification and extra study. Our small sample of Thai job ads does not show that Level 5 improves hiring odds or pay.

Quick answer

What does the extra ฿5,000 buy?

It buys a different qualification pathway and additional academic assessment—not a demonstrated hiring or salary advantage in Thailand. Essential TEFL currently lists its Standard course at ฿45,000 and TQUK Level 5 at ฿50,000. Both are four-week, in-person Bangkok courses with practical teaching; the provider says the Level 5 option adds guided learning hours, assignments and portfolio work.

Choose Standard if practical preparation is your priority and you do not need the separate regulated qualification. Consider Level 5 if you value a formally regulated UK qualification and are willing to complete its assessment. Before paying the premium for employment reasons, ask target schools directly: the six job ads reviewed for this article did not explicitly ask for Level 5, and that sample cannot measure how employers make hiring decisions.

This is a focused comparison of two Essential TEFL routes, not a general review of all TEFL providers. For the full provider overview, see our Essential TEFL review.

What is “Level 5” here?

“120 hours” describes a course’s stated learning volume; “Level 5” describes the level of a particular qualification within the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework. They are not interchangeable labels. The specific registered award is the TQUK Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (RQF), qualification number 601/5234/5.

The qualification specification lists 168 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) and 290 Total Qualification Time (TQT). GLH is guided or supervised learning; TQT is an estimate that also includes directed independent study and assessment. Neither number should be presented as 290 classroom hours. A regulated Level 5 certificate is not a university degree and should not be described as equivalent to CELTA.

Ofqual’s public service lets readers search regulated qualifications. The qualification’s title and number should be checked there and against TQUK’s current specification; a course provider’s marketing label alone is not the qualification register.

Why does Essential TEFL show both 120 and 168 hours?

Essential TEFL’s current pages are inconsistent. Its dates-and-fees, course comparison and overview pages describe Level 5 as 168 hours; its syllabus page also says Level 5 runs to 168 hours. Elsewhere in the provider site, a course summary describes Level 5 as 120 hours. The registered TQUK award specification is 168 GLH and 290 TQT.

These figures may be describing different things—for example, the course’s contact schedule versus the regulated qualification’s guided learning and independent assessment—but the public pages do not explain the discrepancy clearly enough to resolve it. Ask Essential TEFL to confirm in writing which qualification number, total learning expectations, assessment requirements and certificate you will receive for your specific intake.

What the extra assessment means in practice

Both routes are advertised as four-week in-person training in Bangkok, and the provider describes supervised classroom practice for both. The difference is that Level 5 adds formal academic assignments and assessment for the regulated award. The awarding specification describes internal assessment subject to external quality assurance, with all learning outcomes required for a pass; it is not simply an attendance certificate.

Essential TEFL’s public pages do not clearly state the exact submission deadlines, resubmission rules, pass conditions for its course, or the date certificates are issued. Confirm those details before enrolling if they affect your schedule. The Standard course is presented as practice-focused and without formal academic assignments.

In this narrow comparison, extra practical teaching hours are not clearly established as the reason for the price difference: the provider says classroom practice is part of both routes. The extra cost primarily buys the Level 5 qualification pathway and assessment work.

Do Thai schools require Level 5?

The six public job ads reviewed for Phase 1 did not explicitly require a TQUK Level 5 qualification. Some ads mentioned a TEFL certificate or specified 120 hours. The sample is only six listings, gathered from a limited search rather than a representative national survey. Listings may have expired, omit preferences, or use generic wording. It cannot show how often Level 5 affects shortlisting, offers or salary across Thailand.

So the useful conclusion is narrow: in this sample, a 120-hour TEFL requirement appeared and a Level 5 requirement did not. That does not prove Level 5 is never preferred, that employers do not value it, or that it has no benefit in other markets. It also does not establish a pay premium. A school’s actual criteria, your degree, nationality, experience and interview remain important.

Before choosing based on a particular job goal, review live vacancies from schools you would realistically apply to and ask their recruiters which exact certificates they accept. Our guide to whether a 120-hour TEFL certificate is enough covers the broader employer-fit question.

Is Level 5 worth ฿5,000 more?

Standard may fit

Choose 120-hour if…

  • You want the lower published fee.
  • Supervised practical training is your main goal.
  • You prefer to avoid formal written assignments.
  • Your target employers accept a standard TEFL certificate.

At the current list prices, ฿5,000 is the full premium: around 11.1% more than Standard. There is no evidence in the six-ad sample that this premium pays for itself through higher Thai salaries or better hiring odds. If your reason is qualification portability or structured academic study, make that decision on its own merits rather than assuming an employment return.

What both courses have in common

The provider describes both routes as in-person training in Bangkok, with real classroom teaching practice and job support for eligible graduates. Neither course fee includes a promise that a school will hire you. The provider’s course pages state that employment depends on eligibility and school requirements; schools make the hiring decision.

Neither certificate itself grants a Thai visa, work permit or teacher authorization. Check the legal and employer requirements for your circumstances independently. Questions to ask before paying

  • Is my place on the ฿45,000 Standard or ฿50,000 Level 5 route?
  • For Level 5, will my award show qualification number 601/5234/5?
  • What are the exact guided learning, independent study and assessment expectations?
  • What are the assignment deadlines, resubmission rules and certification timeline?
  • Which observed teaching practice is included in each route?
  • Does job support eligibility differ between Standard and Level 5 for my nationality and degree?
  • Which live schools or roles I want to apply for ask for Level 5 specifically?

The job-ad sample in our Phase 1 review contains six publicly available listings checked in October 2026. It is a small, non-random snapshot; it cannot establish national employer preferences, hiring outcomes or salary effects. The ads reviewed did not explicitly require TQUK Level 5. One or more mentioned TEFL or 120 hours. Absence of a Level 5 requirement in these ads is not evidence that no employer values it.
