Online or in-person TEFL in Thailand?

The better format is the one that fits the training, qualification and experience your target employers ask for—and the life you can realistically organise.

Start with what you need from training

Online and in-person courses differ in delivery, opportunities for observed practice, location requirements and logistics. “Online” is not one consistent standard; compare the syllabus, hours, feedback, assessed teaching practice and awarding body for each individual program.

Essential TEFL’s Bangkok courses are described as in-person and include supervised practice with real students. The current course comparison lists a 120-hour Standard route at ฿45,000 and a 168-guided-hour Level 5 route at ฿50,000. Confirm the exact course and certificate details on the provider’s current pages.

An online course may fit if…

  • You cannot relocate or attend fixed weekday classes now.
  • You need flexible pacing around work or family commitments.
  • Your target employers confirm they accept the qualification you are considering.
  • You have a plan for practical classroom experience and feedback if these are important to your goals.

In-person training may fit if…

  • You can be in Bangkok and want a scheduled, intensive cohort.
  • You value observed teaching practice with learners in a local classroom.
  • You want to experience the city and build local connections while training.
  • You have budgeted for the move and the time before any first salary.

Questions to ask any provider

  1. How many guided learning hours and how many face-to-face contact hours?
  2. Will I teach real learners under observation? How many lessons and what feedback?
  3. Which organisation awards the certificate, and can I verify its status?
  4. What do employers in my target location require?
  5. What job support is offered, who is eligible, and what is explicitly not guaranteed?
